On June 21, 2024, PT Indonesia Education Development and Dr. Sutomo University (Universitas Dr. Soetomo) officially signed a cooperation agreement in Surabaya. The signing ceremony, held at the Dr. Sutomo University campus, aims to promote the long-term educational development plans between China and Indonesia through the establishment of an international college. This initiative seeks to enhance academic exchange and cooperation between higher education institutions in both countries.
The signed agreement encompasses a wide range of collaborative efforts, including the joint establishment of the international college, research cooperation, integrated master’s and doctoral programs, academic seminars, and faculty and student exchanges. Initially, both parties will focus on teaching and research collaboration to achieve excellence in higher education.
Founded in 1981, Dr. Sutomo University is a comprehensive institution dedicated to providing high-quality education and research services. The university comprises 10 faculties offering 27 study programs, covering a broad spectrum from humanities to natural sciences. Known for its exceptional educational quality and innovative academic research, Dr. Sutomo University is committed to nurturing outstanding talents with an international perspective and a sense of social responsibility.
At the signing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Siti Marwiyah, President of Dr. Sutomo University, stated, "We are honored to embark on this significant cooperation with our Chinese counterparts. This collaboration will not only advance our educational and research projects and integrated master’s and doctoral programs but also significantly enhance the level of educational exchange and cooperation between our two regions. This partnership will bring new opportunities for educational development and promote cultural exchange, elevating our relations to new heights."
Dr. Xue Ruiteng, Chairman of PT Indonesia Education Development, also expressed strong support for the collaboration: "This partnership opens new avenues for Sino-Indonesian educational cooperation and provides a broader platform for Chinese educational institutions in Indonesia. It will further promote the internationalization of education, facilitate the exchange and integration of higher education resources, and enhance the overall educational level."
Following the signing ceremony, representatives from both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on the specific implementation of the cooperation. After the meeting, Prof. Dr. Siti Marwiyah and Dr. Xue Ruiteng jointly unveiled the newly established international college. They also toured the teaching facilities and discussed the arrival of the first batch of students.
This cooperation marks a new milestone in the deepening collaboration between Chinese-funded institutions and Indonesia's higher education sector. It will continue to promote the coordinated development of industry, academia, and research, advance the internationalization of student training, and achieve the development goals of the China-ASEAN higher education community. Both parties will use this collaboration as an opportunity to further deepen exchange and cooperation in the future.
